Langley Whale Center & Island Shakespeare Festival
Main Street invited the Orca Network to create a whale center in Langley, then provided a grant, and a building. Main Street renovated the building on the corner of 2nd and Anthes, which became a shared home for Main Street and the Langley Whale Center (currently occupied by Whidbey Telecom.) The center outgrew the original home and is now located next door on Second Street. Thousands of visitors come to the center each year, which provides displays, information and education on the whales and marine animals in the Salish Sea.
Two grants have been awarded, The Island Shakespeare Festival and the Orca Network, which created the Langley Whale Center.
When the Island Shakespeare Festival needed a tent for their outdoor summer performances, Main Street provided some of the funds to meet their needs. Now located on Maxwelton Road, the festival has become a summer highlight and destination for visitors from around the country.
